Fuif

Tsjoen
I already came into contact with underground dance music at an early age through tapes recorded in my uncle's club; a weekly festive treat. At the time (1986-1989) residents in the club (Maxys, Sint-Martens-Latem) included Phill Watts, Olivier Pieters and Mo&Benoelie (now called The Glimmers).

It would take another ten years however before I would take place behind the decks myself. In my teens I would attend all kinds of concerts and festivals. The Beastie Boys' concert at The Brielpoort in Deinze was one to remember: especially dj Hurricane's skills made such an impression I called my uncle and retrieved all his old records from the attic. The stack of records soon proved to be a collection of classic material, containing still useful and even hot stuff (including labels such as Transmat, Dance Mania, Trax …). But it wasn't until I saw dj Hype's show at Pinkpop in 1997 that dj'ing kickstarted.

Drum'n'bass was my first love, but not the only one, many others soon followed. The collection rapidly expanded with house, techno and 80s music and I regularly played gigs at student parties and local parties. Since 1998 I host a monthly evening at Clues, a youth bar in Deinze. In 1999 I was the live dj for the dance show “Baken”, a production by Fabuleus (Leuven), in a choreography by Randy De Vlieghe, a show that staged in culture centres all over Flanders and Holland for 6 months. In 2001, 2002 and 2003, under the wings of cultural organisation Cultuurschok (based in Deinze), I organised the event Pop-Eyes. This exclusive party was the ultimate flashback to the 80s, starring guest dj's Andre King Kong, Spacid and the Glimmer Twins. Three times the sign ‘sold out', three times complete madness. Since 2004 I'm concentrating more on collecting records, scanning cheap goods markets and various shops for old jazz and soul vinyl records. This steadily growing collection is my source for various thematic events.

I would rather present myself as a music lover and collector than as a dj or producer. Listening to and discovering music is a passion and much more than a hobby that got a bit out of hand. But I must admit, putting a smile on people's faces through dj'ing is great!
